Obituary for John Alexander "Jack" Walker

    John Alexander "Jack" Walker
    Eulogy for Jack (John) Walker
    (December 8, 1920 – April 30, 2017)

Jack passed away suddenly in Saskatoon the evening of April 30, 2017, at the age of 96.

Jack was born in Govan, Saskatchewan on December 8, 1920, the youngest in a family of 10 of Joseph and Margaret Hunt Walker.
On completing high school he farmed with his Dad for 1 year then he joined the R.C.A.F in October of 1940. While stationed in Calgary he met Gwen Robertson in November of 1944. Jack and Gwen were married on February 24, 1945, and the following day Jack embarked for overseas, England. Jack was discharged from the Airforce in October of 1945. Jack and Gwen then took up residence in Tisdale where they both worked for the Tisdale Supply Co., a department store.
On April 1, 1946 they moved to Brooksby where they had purchased a quarter section of land. While they built their house on the farm they lived with Jack’s sister, Josephine and Jack Deck – this took about 2 months but as soon as the walls were up they moved in. No running water, no water period, it all had to be hauled 3 miles from Andy Bruce’s. This was the only drinkable water in the community. Grandma Walker gave them a wood cook stove and a bed, and with a few orange crates and apple boxes for cupboards they set up housekeeping. Forty seven wonderfully good years were spent on the farm.
Jack joined the Ridgedale Legion and later transferred to the Star City Branch. He served on the United Church Board in Brooksby and Star City for 44 years. He was a member of Canadian Seed Growers for many years and took great pride in growing quality registered grain.
In 1993, Jack and Gwen moved to Tisdale where they have enjoyed their retirement years together.
Jack is survived by his wife Gwen of 72 years, daughter Heather (Vernon) of Star City, son Dave (Debbie) of Saskatoon, son Vince (Sharon) of Brooksby and daughter Jeanette of Saskatoon. As well as 12 Grandchildren, 23 Great Grandchildren and 2 Great Great Grandchildren.
Jack was predeceased by his parents, 9 siblings and his son-in-law Marty (Jeanette).

Jack was a devoted and dedicated husband, father and grandfather. Family was of utmost importance as his attendance at numerous grandchildren’s events showed. Jack was a very humble man who was loved by many and will always be remembered for his kindness and generosity.
