Obituary for Margaret Helen Lyon LeGrand

    Margaret Helen Lyon LeGrand
Margaret Helen Lyon LeGrand (Oliphant) passed away March 12, 2018 peacefully in New Market Manor, Tisdale, Saskatchewan. She died just shy of her 95th birthday!
She is survived by daughter-in-law Linda Oliphant of Cumberland, B.C. and daughters Lorraine (Fred) Waskowic of Prairie River, SK and Lily (Ron) Hoiland of Rocky Mountain House, AB, 9 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson, sister-in-law Dot (Austin) Cragg, sister-in-law Winona LeGrand and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her first husband Jack Oliphant and her second husband LeRoy Arthur LeGrand, parents Peter and Nellie Oliphant, her fathers & mothers in law John and Isabella Oliphant, Peter & Mary LeGrand, her son Grant Oliphant, foster sister Mary and Peter Wedge, brother and sister in laws Bill and Phyllis LeGrand, Ruth and Richard Jabusch and Bob LeGrand.
Margaret was born March 26, 1923 in Aberdeen, Scotland to Peter and Nellie Oliphant. There she attended Skene Square School and Montrose School. She later went to work for a stationery store then for Prudential Insurance.
When World War II broke out Aberdeen was in the thick of the bombing. She has mentioned how she would walk to work by a building that was not there when she came home. She joined the WAAF’s (Women’s Auxiliary Air Force) and RAF ACW1 (Aircrafts Women’s 1st Class).
During the war she met and married Jack Oliphant from Connell Creek, SK and yes, if you noticed they had the same last name, he was a cousin. However, she maintained he was a stranger to her, for a short time! Together they had a son, Grant, who like many at that time, was born at home with a midwife but he was also premature! Tragedy struck the family and Jack died July 15, 1945 in a drowning accident during the war.
This spurred her journey to Arborfield, SK to visit Jack’s parents and show off their 2 year old little boy. She stepped off the train in her fancy city outfit with matching hat and beautiful swede shoes in good old prairie gumbo! That was the end of those shoes! She planned to stay two years and stayed for 72. During that first year she met our Dad, LeRoy LeGrand who, incidentally was a friend of Jack’s.
They were married January 3, 1947 and shortly after had a daughter, Lorraine. They homesteaded in Jordan River (near Arborfield), SK till 1955 when they moved to a farm in Prairie River, Sk. Along came another daughter Lily and then there were 3! In 1976 they retired to Porcupine Plain, Sk. They lived there until Roy’s death in 2005. The following year Margaret moved to McKay Tower in Tisdale, Sk. As her health declined she moved first to the Melfort Assisted Living, then Arborfield Nursing Home then spent her remaining years in New Market Manor, Tisdale, Sk.
Margaret enjoyed baking (famous for her macaroons as her grandkids would attest to), ceramics, sewing, knitting, embroidery and even taught senior aerobics! Roy and Margaret enjoyed music and going to their community dances. Margaret’s love of music stayed with her till the end!
Margaret belonged to the Royal Canadian Legion Mistatim Branch then the Tisdale Branch, the Lutheran Ladies in Porcupine Plain, the Homemakers Club, Prairie River 4H and the Saskatchewan War Brides Association.
Her kind words for everyone, her sweet smile and her special sense of humor will be missed by all who knew her. We’ll miss you Mum!
