    Obituary for Gladys Irene Johnson

    Gladys Irene Johnson
Gladys was born in Eldersley, Saskatchewan at the home of Dr. Rice on February 10, 1923. She was the 2nd daughter to William and Sarah Ellen Pickering, a sister to Vera and Mabel. A brother, Arnold, died as an infant. She grew up on the farm with her mom and dad being among the first settlers in what was known as the Speddington district. She attended grade on e to eight at Sunny Brow and grades none and ten by correspondence. In January, 1941 she left her home to go to work for some friends in Fruitvale and then later Victoria, B.C. After a few months she returned to Bjorkdale. In the meantime her boyfriend Rob Johnson had joined the army and was sent overseas. She never saw him for 5 years but they corresponded as regularly as they could. In the fall of 1941 Robs parents were moving to Toronto and offered to take her with them which she did and found work at a wartime plant called Small Arms; where they manufactured Lee Enfield rifles. Living in Toronto was a real experience after leaving on the farm. Rob returned from overseas in August 1945 and they came back to Bjorkdale. They were married in Tisdale on October 26, 1945 with a reception and dance at Sunny Brow hall. They returned to Toronto shortly after there wedding where Rob and his dad started a woodworking business. They moved back to Bjorkdale in 1946 . Daughter Audrey was born in 1947 and Rob got a chance to work in the Post office so they moved to Tisdale in 1948. Another daughter; Linda was born 1950. Rob retired from the post office in 1978 after 30 years. They did alot of traveling together which they enjoyed very much. Gladys worked for a short time out of the home at Smith hatchery and Beeland Honey Co-op but her main career was her home with a spotless house and fantastic meals. She was a lifetime member of the Legion Auxiliary and spent many years helping cater to banquets; she also belonged to the church and sang in the church choir; enjoyed man volunteer hours with both the Sasko Park Lodge and New Market Manor auxiliaries. Rob passed away 1998 and Gladys continued living in Tisdale until August 2012 when she sold her house and moved to Regina to live with Audrey and Jerry. She never forgot all her friends and was able to make a couple trips back a couple times to visit. Over the years Gladys loved to spend time with her daughters, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her memory forever in their hearts. Gladys will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Audrey (Jerry) of Regina and Linda (Willi) of Calgary and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. Gladys was predeceased by her parents, William and Sarah Ellen Pickering, an infant brother Arnold, sisters Vera and Mabel, husband Rob and granddaughter Winona.
