Obituary for Kenneth Ratcliffe Playford

Kenneth Ratcliffe Playford was the 7th child of Elizabeth and Samuel (Jack) Playford. He was born April 3, 1933. Ken grew up on the family farm and learned to work like the rest of the kids back then. He also learned how to play. Following in his older brother’s footsteps, he played baseball in the summer and hockey and curling in the winter.Ken met and fell in love with Roberta Head, and they were married in 1955. After a few summers of road building with Beatty and McMurdo, and winters in the “Bush” working the lumber camps of the “Pas Lumber Company”, Dad and Mom moved the family to Nipawin, where he began working for the John Deere dealer, Roy Rourke as a partsman. Soon after Roy thought Dad should try selling and, as the story goes, “The Rest is History”.

Dad leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 60 years, Roberta, his children, Ellen (Ken) Wanamaker, Arden (His favorite daughter in law Jackie) Playford, Michelle (Doug) Armstrong,; his grandchildren: Curtis (Tasha) Wanamaker, Greg Wanamaker, Tyler Playford, Evan Playford, Lisa (TJ) Pohlman, Rebecca (Paul) Verlinden; great grandchildren: Whyatt and Bridgette Wanamaker, Brantley Wanamaker and Katie Pohlman.

Dad was predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth and Jack, brothers Harold, Allen, Russell, Steve, Robert, his sister Nan, and several sisters and brothers in law.

Mom, Ellen, Michelle and I would like to thank you very much for taking the time to come and help us celebrate Dad’s life. Your presence, and the thoughts of so many who could not be here are testament to how truly great a man he was. We know he has placed a mark on the hearts of so many people, and he will not be forgotten.
