Hazel Mildred Staples was born January 18, 1923, the second of eight children to Bert and Hazel Sisson, who homesteaded in the Armley district. She received her education at Manlius School and developed a love for sports including ball, track and curling. The many farm chores and household duties developed a strong work ethic which became a trademark throughout her life.
On May 5, 1943 she married Jim Staples of Armley at her parents’ farm. They ran the Imperial Oil Bulk Service along with farming for a couple of years before becoming full-time farmers on newly cleared land. She was very involved in community activities and was a Life Member of both the UCW and Connaught Ag Society. She also served as a 4-H leader, on the United Church Board, the School Trustee Association, Home and School Association, and Armley History Book Committee. In 1997 they moved from the farm-site to Tisdale where she developed many new friendships through the church and Cedar Villa.
Mildred was predeceased by her parents, husband Jim, sisters Olive (Bob) Wallis and Jean (Gordon Wallis), brother-in-law Walter Wallis and sister-in-law Dot Sisson.
Left to cherish her memory are her children: Gary (Georgia), Grant (Andrea) and Wendy (Ric) Ballard; 10 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; sisters Ida Wallis, Lorrayne (Don) Arneson and Berta (Harold) Breadner, brothers Glenn and Mel Sisson, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.
