Obituary for Wanda Gaertner

Wanda Laura Lloyd was born on December 4, 1939, on the farm at Silver Stream, to Phyllis and Irwin Lloyd. She grew up on that farm and went to school just down the road where people still attend the Connaught Fair each year. She learned piano, she rode horses, she played ball, she ran races, she swam in the river, she did all these things with great friends and great brothers, Wayne and Brian.
During some of these many activities she met a young man from the Forester School District and they dated, and they each worked in Saskatoon for a short while after Wanda finished high school, and on October 18, 1958 she married him: Gerhard (Gay) Gaertner, in the town of Tisdale. They honeymooned at Niagara Falls and set out to farm on their own in the New Osgood district, a few miles down the road from Gay’s parents, Henry and Marie Gaertner and not far from Silver Stream.
Their first son, Richard, was born on August 16, 1959 and their second son, Reginald, was born on July 15, 1963. Reggie became sick soon after his birth and after almost seven years of hospitals, and many, many sleepless nights and dedicated hours by Wanda, Reggie passed away on June 9, 1970.
Wanda was a gifted athlete, and any sport she tried she excelled at. She was a wonderful curler, and curled on and off, when she had the time, winning many Grand Challenges at curling bonspiels around the north east. When Wanda and her mother, Phyllis, curled together there were few teams that could beat them. A little later in life Wanda took up bowling and she brought home more trophies than we could find space for. But in both these sports she always talked about her wonderful teammates, and she became friends with many of them.
Wanda loved her family, and we all remember the great family Christmas’s we had over the years, each of the families taking turns, with the great food, the fun and games, the warmth and joy we had together.
Rick and Patti, had a baby girl, Amanda in 1988, and in 1992 they had a baby boy, Mitchell. Wanda loved her grandchildren and spent countless hours with them, doing everything they could imagine. She thought of them as every child should be thought of: as a gift to the world.
Gay and Wanda were married for more than 60 years. The last few years they went everywhere together, on countless drives, visiting friends and family and often just driving to look at the beauty around them in their little corner of the world.
Wanda is survived by: Gay, her loving husband and constant companion; beloved son, Richard (Patti); brother, Brian (Dorothy) Lloyd; grandchildren, Amanda (Andrew) and Mitchell; sisters-in-law, Gail Gaertner and Elfreda Gaertner, brother-in-law, Wilfred Gaertner (Sharon) and many nieces, nephews and wonderful friends.
Wanda was predeceased by: her son, Reginald; by her parents, Phyllis and Irwin Lloyd; by her brother, Wayne Lloyd; sisters-in-law, Doloros Lloyd, Marjorie Lloyd and Shirley Gaertner; and brother-in-law, Arthur Gaertner.
