Obituary for Petrunela "Nellie" McPhaden

With heavy hearts the family is saddened to announce the passing of our dear mother Petrunela McPhaden.
Petrunela (Nellie) McPhaden was born August 24th, 1926 at Brooksby, SK. Mom died peacefully on November 10th, 2020 at Newmarket Place in Tisdale.
She is survived by her children Helen (Vaughn), John (Deb), Dick, and Richenia (Bob). Grandchildren Christopher, Caylan, Erika, and Richard. Sisters Frances, Wilma, Emily, Rochelle, brother Joe, and many nieces and nephews.
Nellie was predeceased by her parents Andrew and Josephine (Faranski) Bednaz, husband John, infant twin sister Wanda and brother Henry.
While growing up on the farm near Brooksby, Nellie attended Willow Valley primary school, and completed high school in Melfort. In her early years she worked at the family café in Brooksby. She also worked in bush camps where she cooked for camp crews. Nellie married John (Jack) in 1954, and they moved to Ridgedale the next year. They started their family in Ridgedale, where they also bought a local garage. In the mid-sixties their family business transitioned from the garage to McPhaden Building Movers. In addition to moving buildings, they also built houses in the yard in Ridgedale which they sold and moved to their customers’ location. After almost 30 years in Ridgedale, in 1993 they moved their home and business to land just north of Tisdale.
Mom had many interests and hobbies. She baked her first cake before she could read. Many young brides in Ridgedale and area had their wedding cake made and decorated by Nellie. She was an active member of the community and member of the Legion Auxiliary, and Home and School Board. She taught cake decorating at Cumberland College.
Nellie enjoyed gardening and flowers, and raising chickens and a few hogs. She was an incredible cook who enjoyed seeing people waddle away from the table. In addition to the love of cooking and gardening, little children brought her great happiness as she watched them grow.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Newmarket Place for their care and compassion during Nellie’s stay.
Donations may be made to the Newmarket Place Auxiliaryas a token of remembrance
