Obituary for Harry Wilfred Kurtz

Harry Kurtz was born May 14, 1943 in Melville, Sask. to Adolf Kurtz and Theresa Deitrich (Daisy).

He was one of 12 children. Harry’s childhood was largely spent playing outside with the neighborhood children. Many neighbours had a large number of children, so there were lots of them to form teams to play hockey or ball games. There could have been some pranks pulled as well!

Being a natural athlete, Harry discovered hockey at an early age and at the age of 19 found his way to Tisdale to play for the Ramblers where he became known for his legendary slapshot. Harry was also an amazing pitcher and the Star City Ball Club soon picked him up. He played there for many years. When he wasn’t playing hockey or ball, he worked for Vickers Car Dealership as a parts man. It wasn’t long after this dealership was sold to Wilf Miller that Harry became a car salesman and then went on to BowMar Sales where he remained until his retirement. Even if you weren’t looking to buy a car at BowMar Sales, you left with one!

Harry married Maureen Robinson on August 9, 1969. They settled down in Tisdale. Children entered the picture with Patrick being born in 1971, Micheal following in 1973 and Megan joining the family in 1975. Patrick and Micheal both played hockey (coached by their Dad) Harry coached both boys only once at the same time. Megan took up the sport of ringette and ball (ball also coached by her dad). As a coach or spectator, Harry was always very involved with his children’s sports. His love for hockey was kept alive when the Tisdale Trojan's AAA Hockey Club won the Air Canada Cup while he was president. He was often asked for guidance from the coaches about possible players for the team. Fun fact, that was the first and only time the Trojans won that cup.

If Harry wasn’t working, he was at the farm fixing the water pipes to pump water to the dugout. If he wasn’t doing that, you could find him at the lake (KIP) taking his kids for a ride behind the boat for hours and hours. If the boat wasn’t working properly, he would say a few choice words and throw the tools into the lake. Harry loved his friends and family and LOVED to BBQ for everyone. His specialty were steaks and burgers. There were many times, he would also BBQ in the middle of winter in a smoke filled garage because it was too cold to open the door. Harry also had a very soft spot for animals especially the family dogs who were frequently the recipient of those wonderful steak bones!

Harry is survived by his wife Maureen, children; Patrick{Raeanne}, Micheal{Wanda} and Megan {Earl} Grandchildren Darien, Kale, Jorian, Jace, Bridjette and Pepper, and great grandchildren Ethan and Mavryk. Step grandchildren Darren and Dawson.

Left to cherish his memory are his brothers, Herbie (Grace) and Art (Chris), sisters, Grace and Shirley. Sister-in-laws Louise and Lynn. Maureen’s family; sister-in-laws, Gay (Danny) and Kris. As well as many nieces and nephews who share fond memories of their special Uncle Harry.
