    Marie Mitchell Obituary

It is with sadness that Sid Mitchell and Lenore Green announce the death of their mother, Marie Mitchell. Born April 4, 1919, she passed away peacefully at home on April 2, 2020, two days before turning 101 years old.
Marie is also survived by Lenore’s husband Dave; their daughter Kim (Chris Gilroy, children Jacob, Teddy); Sid’s children John, Cecilia (Dale Rockel, children Peyton, Caleb), Crystal (Peter Broda), children Tiago, Daniel, August, Verity). Her youngest great-grandson, Theodore (Teddy), was born in Calgary, October 26, 2018, nearly 100 years after Marie was born in the same city. Verity, her youngest great-granddaughter, born January 01, 2020, was Regina’s New Years Baby.
Marie is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Marie was predeceased by her husband Frank (Bud) (December 8, 1919- June 14, 2013) whom she married on June 12, 1947, parents Fred and Kay Hutchinson, brother Norman Hutchinson, sisters Kay Paley, Bessie McLaughlin, brothers-in-laws Charlie Paley, Les McLaughlin and numerous members of the Mitchell family.
Marie lived in or was connected to the Prairie River area since age ten. She enjoyed all aspects of nature and outdoor activity. In late age, Marie particularly enjoyed watching the birds at the feeders and the beautiful sunsets over the river she swam in as a child. Until very late age, she busied herself with gardening, freezing vegetables, picking berries, hand quilting, knitting, crocheting, and new recipes. Marie was proud to be the “most experienced” female driver in snowmobile rallies in Candle Lake and area. In 2018, she was the oldest Wapiti Library card holder and ordered and read books on a regular basis. In her early years, she played ball against the men who worked at the mill, tennis with the locals, and loved dancing.
Marie was active on the farm and in the family business in Carrot River where she was elected as the first female Town Councillor. She was always eager to debate and, as an independent thinker, had an opinion on most topics. Her recall was very good and, in 2012 and 2013, she was delighted to meet descendants of two pioneer families from the district, the Cates and the McCabes, and was able to share vivid memories of their ancestors going back more than 80 years.
We were fortunate to have had our Mother in our lives for so long. She will be laid to rest beside Dad in the Prairie River Cemetery. Due to COVID 19, a service will be held at a later date.
Thank you, Doctor Maree, Doctors, Nurses, and Staff at the Hudson Bay Health Care Facility for the many years of what Mom termed as “wonderful care”.
The family appreciates Bev Hudyma’s long time assistance to Mom and Dad which enabled them to stay in their own home, and Sid’s constant caregiving. Thanks also to Olivia who supported Mom at the end of her life.
Mom often remarked that she had the best neighbours in world and that is certainly true.
    “Everything changes but the memories.”

Lenore and Sid and families, we are so sorry to hear about your mom. I remember her very well from the Carrot River days and always enjoyed our visits at the garage.
